Strategic Exploration

Strategic Exploration is “what you do before you plan.”  It is the critical — and often overlooked — part of a strategic planning process.

Jim Schreier has been working with futurist Joel Barker since 2000.  He’s a Master Trainer of the Strategic Exploration Tools — and in 2012 was named Joel Barker’s Director of Training.

Implications Wheel®

Joel Barker’s Implications Wheel is a powerful “strategic thinking” tool that helps organizations answer the question: “Just what the heck are we getting ourselves into?” Designed to eliminate the “unintended consequences” of our decisions, the Implications Wheel gives team a quick tool for looking into the future.

T.I.P.S. Tracking

T.I.P.S. Tracking is a Strategic Exploration Tool that provides a process of “early spotting the things you should be looking for.”  Designed for individuals and organizations, T.I.P.S. Tracking teaches how to Focus, Organize, and Interrogate important information.  Connected to the powerful software platform, Scoop. It, the program also includes information on how to set up a “T.I.P.S. Team” within an organization.

Strategy Matrix®

Joel Barker’s Strategy Matrix is a powerful pre-strategic planning tool if individuals, teams, and entire organizations want to make better decisions. It helps groups effectively and efficiently process a large amount of information in a short time.

The Strategy Matrix works by carefully defining your organization’s key strategic objectives and characteristics. Then, emerging trends, innovations, policy changes, new strategic objectives — anything that may have an impact on the organization — is evaluated compared to key objectives and characteristics.

Vision Album

Joel Barker’s Vision Album is a group dynamic process for creating and evaluating “vision possibilities.” It is based on the “Vision Process” for creating detailed, specific scenarios.

The Vision Album process works best with diverse groups that “create” and “edit” detailed, visual “pictures” of the future of an organization. Using the metaphor of photography, participants develop new pictures based on the organization “now.” Then the pictures are exchanged with another team for “editing.” Pictures are evaluated based on “strategic priority” and “visual acuity.”

Joel Barker’s Vision Album™ is part of an integrated training program featuring Joel Barker’s best-selling video, The Power of Vision, and the experiential Vision Web.

I would highly recommend the Vision Album process. The process helps to identify existing strengths and weaknesses, focuses discussion to build on what exists, promotes new ways of looking at existing programs, and allows the opportunity to envision new approaches. -Deacon David Nagel, SCJ, St. Joseph’s Indian School
